CoolPeel Pre/Post Treatment Care
what to expect
_______
before your treatment:.
- Prior to treatment, please avoid sun exposure for 2–4 weeks. You'll be given the exact time frame by your HUD Therapist.
- Please ensure fake tan has not been applied for 2 weeks.
- Avoid the use of topical creams, deodorants and perfumes on the area treated on the day of treatment. (We want the skin as clean and clear as possible!)
- Avoid using exfoliants or vitamin A for 7 days before your treatment.
- Inform us if anything has changed in your medications or health since we last saw you.
Numbing Cream: We recommend over the counter cream “Numit”. For your first treatment we recommend you apply in clinic so we can guide you. Subsequently, you are welcome to apply it at home (must be on the skin for 30 mins before we start treatment).
If you would like compounded numbing cream for a stronger effect, please contact us directly and we can provide you details for a compounding pharmacy.
afterwards:
After your CoolPeel, the skin can feel quite hot and red, with some minor swelling. This is all totally normal and an expected response to this treatment. Often, a few days after treatment, you'll see a little bit of what we call "micro-crusting."
possible temporary responses:
It is possible that you may experience some of the following temporary responses as a result of this treatment, which are not a reaction but a response to stimulation of the skin:
- Redness and swelling — try applying a cool compress to help elevate some discomfort, but don't worry, it's temporary and will go down.
- "Sandpaper-like texture" — a common temporary side effect that occurs 3–5 days after CoolPeel. As micro-channels of treated skin heal and old layers prepare to shed, the skin feels rough and bronzed before revealing smoother skin underneath. Make sure not to pick or scratch, as this will affect the healing process and may lead to permanent scarring.
- Histamine response — hive reactions (urticaria). Some of us have naturally high levels of histamine, and this is essentially how our body naturally responds to heat. Apply a cool compress, or visit your pharmacist to obtain an over-the-counter antihistamine or hydrocortisone cream to help with the initial response.
These temporary responses may be relieved by applying your Epicutis post-care pack, or a recommended post-treatment cream as instructed by your HÜD Therapist. If you're worried, please don't hesitate to get in touch so we can assess.
Your Skincare Routine:
No cleansing or any skincare for the first 24 hours.
After the first 24 hours, this will be your morning and evening routine for the first 7 days:
- Gently cleanse with the Epicutis Oil Cleanser and pat dry with a clean towel.
- Gently pat on 1–2 drops of the Epicutis Lipid Serum.
- Gently pat on a pea-sized amount of Epicutis Hyvia Cream.
Only start applying SPF 48 hours post-treatment. Due to this strictly avoid sun exposure for the first 48 hours, and then continue for the next month.
what to avoid after
_______
The first 72 hours:
- If you experience swelling, you can apply a cool compress at home to minimise discomfort.
- Please only use the Epicutis aftercare pack that your clinician will give you on the day of treatment. This includes a gentle oil cleanser, lipid serum, and gentle hydrating moisturiser.
- Please refrain from using any active products on the treated area, such as vitamin A (Revitosin), AHA and BHA exfoliants, and spot treatments (like Acu Therm), for at least 7 days. The skin will be sensitised, so it's best to keep your routine post-treatment nice and gentle.
- Keep up your water intake and EFAs/omegas — this is important, as we want to keep plenty of water in the skin to help move pigment to the surface and strengthen the cells that distribute pigment in the skin.
- Gently cleanse the treated area with a mild Epicutis cleanser. You should aim to pat your skin dry, not rub, during the first 72 hours post-treatment.
- Avoid hot baths and hot showers for 72 hours.
- Avoid anything that involves chlorine (e.g. swimming).
- Don't apply non-mineral makeup, perfumed products, bleaching creams or fake tan to the treated area for at least 72 hours post-treatment, or until all crusting has flaked off.
- Avoid activities that cause excessive perspiration for 7 days after treatment, such as high-intensity exercise, spas and saunas.
- Please make sure you avoid touching your face, and use a clean pillowcase and towel for the first 48 hours to minimise the risk of infection.
For the next 2 weeks:
- Stay out of direct sunlight for up to 2 weeks after treatment, as the skin will be sensitive and needs time to heal. Ensure you are wearing our recommended pigment inhibitor and a broad-spectrum, stable 50+ SPF. We recommend the Mesoestetic Mesoprotech Melan 130 Pigment Control for best results.
- Exfoliate lightly from 7 days following your treatment, using the Home Enzyme Mask, Micro Peel, or another gentle exfoliation method as recommended by your therapist. This aids the process of lifting any loosened pigment off the surface.
